What is Momentum Schools?

Momentum Schools is an innovative program from the Oklahoma Public School Resource Center. We're helping schools and districts change their kids' lives by putting students in the driver's seat of their own education.

In 2015, the Resource Center went to visit Ken Grover at Innovations Early College High School. Ken is an incredible leader and founded this very unique high school that is a part of the Salt Lake City public school system.

If you visit the school's website, you'll learn that they are a personalized learning school. Their values or staples are as follows:

  • provide students with access to blended learning regardless of time;
  • provide high-quality courses for all students through blended learning;
  • use the power and scalability of technology to customize education so that students may learn in their own style preference and at their own pace;
  • use technology to remove the constraints of a traditional classroom. This allows students to access learning at any time and in any place, facilitating flexibility to take advantage of their peak learning time;
  • provide personalized learning where students can spend as much time as needed to master the material;
  • provide greater access to self-paced programs, enabling high-achieving students to accelerate academically, while struggling students have additional time and help to gain competency;
  • allow students to customize their schedule to better meet their academic goals; and
  • provide quality-learning options to better prepare students for post-secondary education and career opportunities.

When you read this list or visit their school, you notice what a departure this is from most of our public school classrooms. This is not a bad thing. One glance at the school or one conversation with a student will open your eyes to the system's efficacy and the students' passion.

It's also important to understand that Grover's school is not focused on high achievers or on students from a well-to-do district. On the contrary: their students are your everyday kids who are coming in and making incredible academic strides.

The Resource Center recognized that this was a model we needed to bring back to Oklahoma for a lot of reasons, but here are a few:

  1. It's an effective system that really meets students where they are.
  2. It empowers teachers to truly connect with students where they're at.
  3. It allows Oklahoma schools to do MORE with less, which is the unfortunate reality in our state.

After seeing what this could do for Oklahoma education, we began to talk to schools and implement similar programs. In year 1, four schools implemented Ken's model. In year 2, we'll be working with 11 different schools around the state.

The OPSRC looks to continue the expansion of Momentum schools each year using not only Ken's model, but other models as well. Personalized learning is about making things click and fit for every student; as such, we recognize that every district has different needs and resources and will need to make their approach unique.

We're looking forward to working with your school, so sign up today to become a Momentum School, or you can read our implementation guide to learn more.
